Covenant of Mayors on Europa | Covenant of Mayors Forum
The Covenant of Mayors is an ambitious initiative of the European Commission that will bring together the mayors of Europe's most pioneering cities in a permanent network to exchange and apply good practices across these cities and beyond to improve energy efficiency significantly in the urban environment. The Covenant of Mayors is the response of the most active cities to global warming: a formal commitment by the cities to reduce their CO2 emissions even beyond the EU 20% objectives. Almost 100 cities throughout Europe, including 15 capitals, have expressed their willingness to join.
The Covenant of Mayors consists of the commitment by the cities to to go beyond the objectives of the EU energy policy in terms on reduction of CO2 emissions through enhanced energy efficiency and cleaner energy production and use.
The Covenant of Mayors was launched at the plenary event of the Seventh ManagEnergy Annual Conference which took place on 29 January 2008 as part of the Second EU Sustainable Energy Week. A draft text, prepared in informal consultation with many cities and networks of cities, was presented during the event. You can view video recordings from the event by clicking on the VideoCards to the right of this page.
You can also view interviews and presentations by some of the Mayors.
Now it is time to proceed with the Covenant's implementation. To that purpose, the European Commission aims to open a wide consultation and information process via its websites, including ManagEnergy.
A Forum on the Covenant of Mayors enabling local and regional energy actors to comment on the Covenant was added to this website on 15 February 2008.
